The 2010 Living Healthy Commotions Booklet
The Living Healthy Commotions Activity Booklet will be forwarded to all schools in the fall 2010. This Booklet contains suggestions on how to plan a Commotion, activity ideas, ways to encourage students to participate and information on healthy eating, physical activity and smoke free resources available. The Commotions Registration and Evaluation Forms and the contact information for the School Health Promotion Liaison Consultant in your school district are also included in the Booklet.

Living Healthy Commotions Eastern 2007
On Friday September 29, 2007 schools across the province took part in
Living Healthy Commotions as students, teachers, administrators, parents
and community partners celebrate making their schools healthy places to
learn. The Living Healthy Commotions are part of the Healthy Students
Healthy Schools provincial initiative.

This initiative arose from student comments last year at the provincial
Healthy Schools Student Summit. Students identified the need to create
local events and activities that celebrated and highlighted Living
Healthy schools. The Commotions will serve to highlight the new school
food guidelines, new physical activity equipment, the smoke-free school
ground policies and many other initiatives in place to create a healthy
school environment.
Living Healthy Commotions Western 2006
Students dressed in red to represent a healthy heart and a healthy
breakfast was served. This was followed by 30 minutes of physical
activity. Students then completed a healthy living art display.
Elementary students participated in a healthy placemat art activity.
A healthy lunch was served to kick off a new school lunch menu followed
by skipping to kick start the new skipping program. Healthy posters were
created and music played throughout the day to encourage students to
participate in various exercises.
A Smoothie Recess was held with all students receiving a fruit smoothie
featuring Labrador berries and common fruits and yogurt. The Smoothie
Recess introduced students to a pop-alternative drink that's both
healthy and tasty.
A school held a Drop the Pop challenge.
The school used their Commotion to start their Vegetable Sale
fundraiser.
Many schools organized Participation Nation walk-run events.
No Smoking signs were painted at one school.
Students decorated their classroom doors with fruit trees and
vegetables, had a fruit and vegetable tasting event, painted signs
around the school saying Glad to be Smoke Free and held a dance
marathon.
A Healthy Food Idol contest was held, healthy snacks were served,
fitness classes were offered and healthy recipes were given out.
Students created a healthy recipe booklet and a series of fact sheets
and ran an aerobics class.
A school used their Commotion as a kick start for their Mission
Nutrition program.
An aerobics tag session was held for students in yet another school.

The Grocery Store Relay
This activity offers an opportunity to work together collaboratively while learning about healthy eating and carrying out a fun physical activity. We have included a lesson plan, graphic materials and a teacher’s guide.
What’s For Dinner?
This fun activity combines information about healthy eating with an opportunity to get active and run around.

Healthy Active School Communities
Download the Alberta Health & Wellness Guide to Healthy Eating and Active Living (6 to 12 yrs.) which provides information you can use to encourage your preschooler to be active and achieve healthy eating habits.

Take a look at this presentation. Invite a student to present, or ask students to develop new presentations using a similar format. Students can present material to their classmates, or to younger students.
