LIVING HEALTHY COMMOTIONS LABRADOR 2008

Labrador School District Summaries

St. Peter’s School

Location: Black Tickle
Student Population: 43 (K-12)

This year the staff and students at St. Peter’s School displayed a phenomenal effort and put together a very successful Living Healthy Commotion. This year they decided to collaborate the classes to entertain the whole school in all activities.

Leading up to the Living Healthy Commotion younger students made posters and banners to promote living healthy lifestyles, while others created healthy menu displays around the school to signify its importance. To jump start the day students showed off their talents and entertained themselves with skits and a puppet show. Next, students boosted their brain power with a Jeopardy Game show with a Living Healthy “Flavor”. Categories and questions for this game were derived from eating healthy and living active themes.

Both staff and students were then treated to a healthy lunch at the school with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables to re-energize for the evening. After lunch, the Physical Activity component of their commotion kicked into high gear. First, some students set out on a scavenger hunt in which they had to use clues to find ‘hidden’ items around the school, while others went on a nature hike. The finale for the day was a game of Dodgeball with students vs. teachers, which brought out great sportsmanship and lots of good laughs.

A. P. Low Primary

Location: Labrador City
Student Population: 395 (K-3)

To begin Commotions Week students designed place mats with living healthy themes on them. These would be used for their recess on commotion day. Teachers also decided to incorporate some of their living healthy ideas and messages into articles for their upcoming schools newsletter.

On Commotions Day, morning students engaged in a physical activity program in the gym which included an array of running, jumping, clapping activities in the gymnasium. All students were very excited about the activities and had great fun participating. Afterwards, students were treated to a well deserved healthy recess snack and all were very happy to receive.

The highlight of this year’s event was the Terry Fox Run. This year the school decided to partner with the high school and parents to support this very worthy cause. Staff and students decided to wear red in light of this activity and were quite amazing to watch as they paraded through town.

Menihek High School

Location: Labrador City
Student Population: 632 (8-12)

To promote this years Commotion the Senior High Healthy Living classes decided to design and decorate the school hallways with banners to promote Living Healthy. On Living Healthy Commotion Day you could see bright, colorful posters all throughout the school promoting Healthy messages and lifestyles. In addition, local public health nurses also posted a display where students could get information, and encouraging Smoke Free living.

For recess the class prepared a sampling of fruits and vegetables to be given to the rest of the students for a small snack. During this time, students took the opportunity to speak to the rest of the students about the benefits of eating healthy, staying active and being smoke free. Students used this as a way to get the message out about living healthy and were quite happy with the response it received.

At lunch the students had organized a school wide Tug-O-War competition. This seemed to be a great way to keep the momentum going in their pursuit of promoting Healthy Living. For this reason, students were seen soon after quickly finishing their lunch to join in and participate in this very popular but friendly competition.

To finish off the day the students coupled with the neighboring primary school to participate in the Terry Fox Run. Students marched through town together in the pursuit of living healthy, spirit of cooperation, and support of a very commendable charity.

B. L. Morrison School

Location: Postville
Student Population: 58 (K-12)

To start off Commotion Day, students were greeted at the school with a healthy breakfast including whole grain toast, cereal, juices and fruits. After breakfast students returned to their classes and took part in a number of living healthy activities including painting pictures, constructing posters, and creating name tags to use around the school to celebrate their day.

Once recess came along parents and local organization were invited to the school to help prepare and serve a healthy snack. Here students enjoyed a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, juices, and milk. This was a very unique experience and received much positive feedback from students and staff alike. Fresh and ‘new’ fruits (such as cantaloupe and pineapple) and vegetables (such as broccoli and cauliflower) are a rare commodity in Labrador’s coastal communities. These communities have difficulties getting ‘regular’ fruits and vegetables due to the lack of transportation measures available for there supply. It goes without saying that the type of foods that are available for purchase is often restricted, as well. Furthermore, when supplied, these items are often priced at a premium making them very impractical for purchase to the average consumer. Thus having some funding available to give students the opportunity to sample them was a great asset, and was greatly appreciated.

After recess, everyone, including volunteers and teachers, participated in the Terry Fox run by walking through town with their students. To round off this year’s Living Healthy Commotion Day, they participated in a fun filled afternoon of low organized games in the gym with parents and staff.

Peenamin McKenzie School

Location: Sheshatshiu
Student Population: 362 (K-12)

This year the school decided to incorporate a variety of activities throughout the week to promote healthy, active lifestyles. These activities engaged students from all sections of the school to support Living Healthy in their own individual way.

For instance, students in Junior High designed posters while students in Primary/Elementary set up displays of “My Favorite Foods” to contextualize what active living and healthy eating meant to them. On the other hand, Students in Senior High decided to go pick berries as a means of being active while doing traditional activities. These lessons also included customary uses, berry nutrition, preserving techniques as well as a traditional Innu lunch (using their berries). Other classes participated in ‘Fresh Air For Fitness’ and ‘Falls Fortunes’ which combined leaf gathering, outdoor physical activities, and garbage pick up around the school to raise awareness of keeping the environment clean in aid of a healthier cleaner community. These activities proved to be quite successful in that they not only combined a variety of classes getting out, having fun, and being active but the students did quite well by cooperating with each other and it helped merge some positive peer relationships.

To celebrate Commotion Day students displayed their posters around the school as well as had a wide variety of fruits and vegetable samples for tasting. In the afternoon students and staff participated in a walk through of the community to commemorate the Terry Fox Run.
