LIVING HEALTHY COMMOTIONS LABRADOR 2009

School: Amos Comenius Memorial School
Location: Hopedale
Student Population: 146
Grades Levels: K-12

This year the school decided to combine a number of committees to make their Living Healthy Commotion day a success. To plan this event the Breakfast and spirit committees, as well as a number of other staff teamed up plan this tremendous day.

To kick start the morning, all students were treated to a delicious breakfast of toast, cereal, milk, and an assortment of juices. They would need this to fuel their bodies for a fun filled day of activity. For starters, primary and elementary students enjoyed morning activities in the gym where they had a chance to play a variety of sports. Likewise, once the first bell rung to begin classes all staff and students joined in on a walk through town as a part of the ‘walk to school’ month festivities. Once they returned, students were greeted to a healthy snack to re-energize.

At the spirit committee’s request, a hockey theme was added to this years’ commotion day naming it also ‘Hockey Day at ACMS’. Thus, students and staff donned their favorite team colors to commemorate this fantastic day. For this reason, physical education classes included games and activities relating to hockey, and not to forget the famous rivalries. To keep the momentum going all Junior and Senior High classes combined to participate in a hockey game at recess while other staff and students could cheer them on from the sidelines. In the afternoon, classes took time out to stretch during periods to remind them of the importance of stretching and the many components of living healthy.

QUOTES OF THE DAY
“I enjoyed the idea of a fun theme like hockey. It brought spirit to our day and added a fun component which is what we try to encourage when making choices to participate in activities for healthy living”

“Take the time because it requires organization. Also, partnering up with the Breakfast program and spirit days gives it more energy and gets the staff more on board.”

The staff decided that this year’s Living Healthy commotion would focus on healthy eating and how important it is for a wholesome lifestyle. For this reason, the activities they participated in centered on food and what it means to eat healthy.

To begin the morning the staff prepared a wonderful breakfast for students that included toast, cereal, milk, juice, and an assortment of fruit. Once they had finished, the entire student body went for a walk to celebrate ‘Walk to School’ month and to take in some fresh air. At this time, it was stressed that regular exercise and a proper diet are fundamental for a healthy lifestyle. While activities such as walking, jogging and hiking are low impact in nature, they play a very big role in helping one be stronger, happier and healthier. Therefore, in the afternoon Junior and Senior High teachers took this opportunity to pick berries and to educate students about the various healthy foods that are found locally. As a part of this trip, students discussed how to prepare such foods in more healthy, conventional ways. This proved to be great chance for students to discover the many possibilities that they had open to them by choosing to eat local foods and preparing meals themselves.

QUOTES OF THE DAY
“It provided a great opportunity for staff and students to interact in a fun and rewarding manner”

“It was all worth the while. It certainly pays off for school spirit and encourages a positive school climate.”

“It was very emotionally healthy and physically beneficial”.

The Living Healthy commotions this year started off with a school walk around the block which also commemorated the annual ‘Terry Fox Run’. Students and staff alike showed their support by parading through town with posters and crafts that signified these commendable events. This year also marked another notable event with the addition of a new parking lot at Peacock Primary. Thus, at this time students participated in decorating the newly paved surface with living healthy messages, picture collages, murals, and games. All the while, music blasted from the intercom to encourage dancing, fun, and in the spirit of having a good time. Teachers also took part in displaying their artistic skills and even joined in on a few games of hopscotch. To continue with the living healthy theme, teachers plan to serve fresh fruit to students each month to remind them to eat well as a part of staying healthy.

Throughout the week both students and staff were very busy preparing for Living Healthy Commotion. They took this time to spread the commotion message to be active and eat healthy with an array of activities to help promote this incredible event. They approached this commotion with great vigor and excitement and it sure paid off. First, students made wonderful colored posters and placemats to be displayed around school and some to take home. Secondly, they all participated in a ‘Physical Activity and Healthy Eating challenge’ where students were enticed to carry out all week. During Living Healthy commotion day these results would be displayed and discussed to see how well each class did.

To start the Living Healthy Commotion Day the “Muscle Hustle” was played over the intercom where everyone was welcomed to join in and have some fun. Music and danced periodically continued throughout the day after recess and to begin the afternoon with ‘YMCA’ and ‘Do the Dragon’ respectively. This proved to be excellent fun that everyone enjoyed.

Physical Education classes for that day focused on student fitness. Each period students had the pleasure of participating in fun fitness-type activities such as Gym Go and the Alphabet Fitness Challenge which combined language arts activities with physical activity. To continue with some cross curricular links, students during classes were involved in an Alphabet Scavenger Hunt which used grocery store flyers and Canada’s Food Guide for answering the clues. To top the day off everyone enjoyed a much deserved fruit kabob that they made all by themselves.

QUOTES OF THE DAY
“The songs over the PA were a big hit. The children really enjoyed doing the actions in their classroom. We have since decided to have an action song over the PA every Friday morning.”

School: J.R. Smallwood Collegiate
Location: Wabush
Student Population: 487
Grade Level: 4-7

This year J.R. Smallwood collegiate decided that they would host a Run-A-thon to celebrate Living Healthy Commotions Day. In this event each classroom were given a twenty (20) minute time limit to complete as many laps as they could around the gymnasium. For each lap completed they would be given points towards their house league totals. Students really seemed to enjoy this because it encouraged everyone to try their best and participate with no emphasis placed on winning or losing. Students were satisfied knowing that they each contributed to their teams’ success but without the pressure of having to perform better than anyone else. Afterwards, students returned to their classrooms to make a Living Healthy poster. These posters promoted healthy living and what it means to them, and was proudly displayed in the school’s gymnasium for everyone to see.

QUOTES OF THE DAY

“The posters students designed were amazing and they really help brighten up our gymnasium”

“Having living healthy activities during school hours can really boost participation.”
