LIVING HEALTHY COMMOTIONS EASTERN 2008

Beachy Cove Elementary, Portugal Cove – St. Phillip’s

Members of Run for One Planet participated in the Commotion at Beachy Cove Elementary. The two runners met the students and staff, and gave a motivational speech which inspired many. After lunch the primary students engaged in a walk around the school, and the grade two classes received a fruit sampling presentation by Sobeys. Each classroom teacher in grades 4 to 6 was given a booklet of healthy living activities to complete with their students in the afternoon. Finally, all grade 4 classes took part in a cardio dance routine in the gymnasium lead by the classroom teachers. Overall it was a fun-filled day!

Brother Rice Junior High, St. John’s

The Living Healthy Commotion at Brother Rice was a huge success! This year they started small with a school-wide walk, but they plan on having many more Commotions throughout the school year. The next event is an outing to the National Soccer Championship.

Each year Brother Rice has over 17 sports teams, a very diverse physical education program, and daily intramurals at lunchtime. The Living Healthy Commotion events help to diversify the physical education program for everyone.

Cowan Heights Elementary, St. John’s

The Living Healthy Commotion at Cowan Heights Elementary jump started the school’s commitment to active and healthy living. The day began with each class participating in two movement sessions. The music teacher led classes in a dance activity, while the physical education teacher organized fitness challenges using a variety of equipment. Activities were diversified to meet the age levels of the students. Teachers participated with their classes, proving to be great role models. Throughout the morning the students and staff had the opportunity to taste healthy foods, with parent volunteers playing an essential role.

During the afternoon the entire school participated in the Terry Fox Walk. To start the activity Rikki-Lee Noseworthy, School Health Promotion Liaison Consultant, discussed the importance of being active and eating healthy, then lead the school in a cardio funk warm-up. Two physical education students from Memorial University also lead the school in an aerobic activity.

The fine weather, support from guests and volunteers, and the enthusiasm generated throughout the school made for a great day.

Goulds Elementary, Goulds

Goulds Elementary’s Living Healthy Commotion consisted of a Terry Fox walk, fitness workout lead by a dance instructor, school wide fit-go and “Fruity Friday” recess. During recess all classes participated in the “Fruity Friday” recess snack activity. A graph of the types and amounts of fruit was completed during the morning period. These graphs were then posted in the hallway. All students were scheduled in the gym for a 30 minute fitness session with a dance instructor. The day concluded with school wide fit-go. The first class to complete and fill out their card won an outdoor fitness session with the principal.

Holy Cross Junior High, St. John’s

Holy Cross Junior High students enjoyed the Living Healthy Commotion on Friday, September 26. In the afternoon a pep rally was held in the gym to raise awareness of the need for more cancer research and how school children all over the world are continuing to carry on Terry’s dream. The entire school population walked around the neighborhood together in honor of Terry Fox. Upon returning to school, students participated in grade level games of “Survivor Dodge Ball”. As students were tagged out of the game they received a special healthy snack.

Holy Heart of Mary High School, St. John’s

The Commotion at Holy Heart started with two guest speakers, Ramesh Ferris and Geoff Eaton. Ramesh Ferris presented on behalf of Cycle to Walk, which raises awareness for Polio. Geoff Eaton, from Young Adult Cancer Canada, promoted the Real Time Cancer Climb. They both provided inspirational messages and promoted the importance of health in relation to their causes.

Next, students led the group in a warm up before everyone headed out into the sunshine to walk around the neighborhood. When everyone arrived back to the school, students had healthy treats – water, juice, granola bars and dried cranberries. It was a great day for the Highlanders to get up and get moving!

Larkhall Academy, St. John’s

For the Commotion at Larkhall the Commotion Committee planned several activities. During the morning, students, teachers and volunteers met in the neighborhood park and walked to school. Prior to recess the “Cha Cha Slide” played over the PA and everyone danced along to the music. For recess fruit trays were delivered to each classroom to assist teachers’ efforts with promoting healthy eating and teaching the importance of choosing healthy snacks for recess. After recess there was more dancing to YMCA and the Macarena, followed by Fit-Go.

During lunch students filled up on healthy foods from the four food groups, specially prepared by parents, then played on the playground. Next was aerobics with Jamie Feener, who pumped everyone up with silly moves and good music. Everyone raised the roof and worked up a sweat during this fun and educational day.

Mobile Central High, Mobile

Mobile Central High participated in the annual Living Healthy Commotion and it was an activity filled day. In the morning the students were treated to a lively concert with Tommy Sands. After the entertainment they had a nutrition break with healthy snacks that were prepared by the Healthy Living class. The Healthy Living class played an important role throughout the week leading up to the Commotion Day. They created posters to promote healthy living awareness that they posted around the school. Way to go Healthy Living class!

After the nutritious snack the entire school was divided into teams and participated in a World Cup Soccer Tournament. The students enjoyed the opportunity to socialize outside of their grade level and play with other members of their school. The afternoon session saw the entire school participate in the annual Terry Fox Run. The Living Healthy Commotion was a great opportunity to get the students active, and it helped create camaraderie amongst the students.

Morris Academy, Mount Pearl

Students, staff, parents and invited guests had a fun-filled Commotion Day at Morris Academy. The day began with “Healthy Heart Bingo”, with cards that have healthy foods and activities instead of numbers. All students then received a piece of fruit for recess.

All students then participated in a scavenger hunt around the school, followed by the Terry Fox Walk. The day was a huge success with everyone having fun and being active!

O’Donel High School, Mount Pearl

Again this year O’Donel featured a full day long celebration of living healthy. The day started with a healthy continental breakfast purchased, prepared and served by our newly elected Student Council. Mr. Ron Fitzpatrick, Executive Director of Turnings delivered a very powerful message to students on drug abuse. The remainder of the day involved guest presenters from the O’Donel community, offering activity sessions in Aerobics (Janet Graham), Self-Defense (Mount Pearl School of Martial Arts), and Boot Camp (CardioFit), totally free of charge. Students also made use of the local bowling alley and walking trails. The beautiful weather on Friday the 26th made everyone want to improve their personal health. It was a splendid day and their best to date.

Paradise Elementary, Paradise

Paradise Elementary was proud to support the Living Healthy Commotion initiative and planned a very exciting day for students, staff, parents, volunteers, school council and community members. Their goal was to “bring the students home”.

All students and staff were bussed from the Newfoundland School for the Deaf and transported to Neil’s Pond in Paradise. When everyone arrived they walked around Neil’s Pond and then finished at the gymnasium of the new community/recreation centre on McNamara Drive. The Town of Paradise was very supportive and all students and participants raved about the new building. At the conclusion of the activity all participants were treated to a nutritious snack as local business supported the walk by providing yogurt and bottled water to all participants. Approximately 725 students and staff participated, as well as about 175-200 parents and supporters. In the gymnasium everyone enjoyed a pep rally followed by live entertainment featuring Mr. Ray Lake.

Rennie’s River Elementary, St. John’s

To celebrate the Living Healthy Commotion at Rennie’s River Elementary, students participate in numerous activities throughout the morning including soccer games and relay races. Following the activities each class was presented with a healthy snack which was organized by the dedicated parent volunteers. The day ended with a school-wide walk down Rennie’s River to help support the Terry Fox organization.

St. Andrew's Elementary, St. John’s

As part of the goal to promote living healthy, students, staff and parents embarked on a joyful event coinciding with the scheduled Terry Fox School Walk. Developing the whole child is a daily event the educators encourage at St. Andrew's Elementary School. With the school having such a diversity of ethnic and cultural differences what better way to bring these differences together than celebrating a Canadian symbol that brought an entire country together.

On Friday afternoon the students joined together with their reading buddies and walked around the neighborhood to promote a healthy attitude and to recognize Terry Fox’s accomplishments. Upon returning to the building the students, staff and parents were treated to a beautiful display of fruit and vegetable platters prepared by a former student. Each table provided a large variety of fruits and vegetables to symbolize the large variety of cultures at St. Andrew’s. Along with a fresh cold bottle of water it made for a very rewarding and enjoyable event.


St. Augustine’s Elementary, Bell Island

On Friday, September 26th, staff and students celebrated Commotion Day 2008. The day started off with everyone meeting in the gym for some Quality Daily Physical Activity. First everyone got energized by following along with the Fit Kids video. Then a group of Grade 6 students took to the stage to lead the school in two dances. Everyone then formed a train back to their own classroom. From there they went on a community walk. When students returned, they were served a healthy breakfast by teachers and Kids Eat Smart Volunteers. During the afternoon students went to the gym for activities that combined character education and physical activity. The day ended with healthy food taste testing where students had to complete a relay and then sample a variety of foods that they would not normally try.

St. Kevin’s Junior High, Goulds

The Commotion plans at St. Kevin’s Junior High incorporated a variety of student interests. Students were given a choice of four different activities, including skating, softball, soccer and walking. In addition to students getting their choice of activity, they also got an opportunity to mix with students from other classes and grade levels. Students doing the same activity met at a pre-arranged location from where they left to walk to their activity sites. After the activities, students returned to the school for a healthy snack, which included a bottle of water and a granola bar.

St. Mary’s Elementary, St. John’s

St. Mary’s Elementary took advantage of the beautiful trails that exist within the Waterford Bridge Road area. After their usual early morning ‘fitness pursuits’, the gymnasium quickly filled with signs, chants, cheers, and enthusiasm as everyone participated in a mass “Chicken Dance”. Next, each class created signs that included slogans and pictures that highlighted health, nutrition, and activity. Students from each grade took turns leading their class using their proudly held sign.

Later in the day, St. Mary’s Elementary was very pleased to welcome Matt Hill and Stephanie Tait, who introduced their “Run for One Planet”. Matt and Stephanie interacted with students and described their long journey of running to inspire everyone to take on new actions for earth.

St. Mary’s Elementary had a very enjoyable and educational Living Healthy Commotion!

St. Michael’s High School, Bell Island

The Healthy Living 1200 class took on the challenge of organizing the Living Healthy Commotion at St. Michael’s. They had races to see which class could run around the school the fastest, leapfrog in the hallways, and some classes walked around the gym like animals! Next everyone gathered in the gym for the chicken dance. Fresh muffins and juice was served at recess, then everybody went on a “Walk of Hope” to help support breast cancer awareness.

After the walk, there was a school-wide flag hunt. Flags were hid everywhere - on cars, under rocks, in both the gym and cafeteria – and students had a blast looking for them. The day ended with six different games from around the world. Students rotated to different stations that were placed throughout the school.

St. Peter’s Junior High, Mount Pearl

This year St. Peter's Junior High participated in a Healthy Commotion Activity which coincided with the Terry Fox Walk. For the Healthy Commotion Activity they divided the school in half for a 2 period duration. During each session they had 325 students participating in the Cha-Cha Slide, the Macarena and the YMCA. They provided a healthy fruit snack to every student. All students and staff seemed to enjoy themselves as they had 100% participation for this event.

St. Teresa’s Elementary, St. John’s

The staff and students at St. Teresa’s Elementary had a very active week. Each day the students participated in cross-country running after school. On Tuesday they had the privilege of having a 50 minute yoga sessions with a children’s yoga specialist, Maala from Vancouver.

They began their Commotion with aerobics and healthy snacks for all students. The highlight of the day was the walk around Mundy Pond. This walk focused not only on fitness but concluded their International Peace Week celebration as well. All students had a great surprise as they crossed Mundy Pond Road under the escort of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Mounted Horse Patrol. The officers participated in the walk with the students.

Vanier Elementary, St. John’s

Commotion Day gave Vanier Elementary School students another reason to be active. Students, teachers, and members of the school community participated in a whole list of active living events. Some took place outdoors in the playground, some on the soccer pitch, others on parking lot, and still others in the gymnasium. Wherever they were, they were active all day.


Villa Nova Junior High, CBS

Students from Villanova Junior High really demonstrated that they know how to be healthy during their Living Healthy Commotion! The day began with a healthy breakfast from the Eat ‘N Run Café, then students were off to partake in a full day of activities. Students participated in the Terry Fox Run, boot camp, step test, body ball training, synchronized dance in the gym and their favorite activity of the day, Hip Hop Dance instruction from Martin Vallee of Dance Studio East. Throughout the day students entered their name for prizes if they were “Caught eating something nutritious”. Furthermore, the homeroom that created the best healthy living motto for the school received an afternoon of skating. By the end of the day all students and teachers left the building exhausted, but all were talking about what a wonderful day it was!


Pearce Junior High, Burin Bay Arm

Commotion Day at Pearce Junior High was a big success. The day started with free play in the gym before morning classes began. During recess members of the school council volunteered to distribute healthy snacks and water to the student body and at the same time students were invited to participate in the “Cha-Cha Slide”. During period three students came to the gym for fun classroom competitions, then for lunch students participated in a mass game of “Soccermania.” Finally the afternoon featured a school wide Terry Fox walk as well as the “Amazing Race”. At the end of the day there were many pink faces and smiles, an indication of a great day!

Lake Academy, Fortune

To commemorate the 28th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope, and to celebrate the Living Healthy Commotion, Lake Academy hosted a Terry Fox fund raising event. Kindergarten to grade 7 students watched a DVD of Terry’s legacy in the school gym, made banners and posters, and collected over $4200.00 for the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research and treatment. Students, along with family and friends, paraded throughout the town accompanied by the local RCMP and the Fortune Fire Department. Upon returning to the school, students were treated to a variety of fresh fruit prepared by parent volunteers.

John Burke High School, Grand Bank

John Burke High School started their commotion day by having each individual class develop a living healthy class name. They also created a banner and a chant that encorporated the key components of living healthier lifestyles (eating well, being physically active and staying smoke free). The morning ended with students and staff dancing to the “Cha Cha Slide.” To wrap up the day a softball game was played between the teachers and students at the local field. Commotion Day is a day that students and staff look forward to as a way kick off the year with enthusiasm and school spirit.

Donald C. Jamieson Academy, Burin Bay Arm

To celebrate the commotion day at D.C. Jamieson students and staff wore red to represent a healthy heart. Things kicked off in the morning with fruit tasting. Strawberries were given to students by volunteers and each student that eat strawberries filled out a ballot for which they could win a prize. Students also took part in a walk around the Salt Pond trail which is located behind the school. This was also the start of the schools “Walk Across Canada” challenge where students are rewarded with a soc hop with healthy snacks when certain distance goals are reached. Finally, students joined forces to make posters on living smoke free, healthy eating and active living which are now displayed throughout the school!

St. Joseph’s Academy, Lamaline

For students at St. Joseph’s Academy Commotion Day meant being fully engaged in fun physical activity while learning how to live healthy active lifestyles. The primary and elementary students were engaged in activity stations during the morning and played dodge ball and soccer baseball against the teachers in the afternoon. The high school students attended a relaxation session with Ms. Florence Jarvis and took part in a Healthy Living Scavenger Hunt in the morning and followed with a teachers-students softball game in the afternoon. The day was a great success and fun for all who participated.


St. Mark’s School, Kings Cove

Students at St. Mark’s combined their “Living Healthy Commotion” with the annual “Terry Fox Run/Walk” which was held on Friday, September 26th.What a great way to celebrate healthy commotion day, enjoying a beautiful autumn day and raising money for Cancer research. They raised $1266 for the Terry Fox campaign. When students arrived back at the school they were treated with healthy juice packs, fruit and vegetable trays. Students were pleased that constable Benger from the Bonavista Detachment of the RCMP took part in the walk.

Clarenville Primary School, Clarenville

The Living Healthy Commotion at Clarenville Primary was a huge success as it included all students and teachers from kindergarten through to Grade Three. The Recreation Director from the town of Clarenville joined the group and led the Terry Fox Walk through the beautiful hiking trails around the town. The director encouraged the children and their families to visit the trails again to further their healthy living goals. Upon arriving back to the school all children were served a healthy snack by parents.

Davis Elementary, Carbonear

Davis Elementary took part in a number of activities as part of Living Healthy Commotion Day. Both students and staff dressed in black and white to take part in a full day of activities. These included fun activities such as Terry Fox walk, healthy living bingo, grocery store shopping, healthy food tasting and school wide synchronized dancing in the gym. There was also an educational part of the day that featured a Techno Lab Nutrition, Digestion Movie, and a presentation on boating safety. All students enjoyed “Getting Healthy, Getting Happy and Getting Active” theme that was associated with the day.

Tricon Elementary, Bay de Verde

Students at Tricon Elementary are showing great enthusiasm for healthy living and Commotion Day was evidence. The children started the morning with a walk around the school grounds and were treated with healthy snacks when they returned. After recess students went back to their homerooms to work on class banners and slogans. When they finished all students gathered in the gym where each class individually presented to the rest of the school in a show of healthy living ideas and overall school spirit.

Amalgamated Academy, Spaniards Bay

Commotion Day at Amalgamated Academy was a huge success. For the first time ever the entire school participated in the Terry Fox Walk. The students appreciated learning about Terry and his legacy. Each class participated in a 45 minute walk around the community and were joined by many parents. Following the walk, each class was welcomed back to the school with a fruit platter in their classrooms which they throughly enjoyed. To top off the day it was annouced that the school raised approximately $400 for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Perlwin Elementary, Winterton

The staff at Perlwin in Winterton used the healthy commotion day as a way to combine cirriculum outcomes with healthy living. The elementary students toured the Salmonier nature park. In addition to the presentations on habitants the students walked around the entire park. The entire day proved to be a great experience. Meanwhile, the primary division enjoyed a field trip to Carbonear and spent a portion of thier day at the track and field facility.

Ascension Collegiate, Bay Roberts

Ascension Collegiate used the commotion day to celebrate their achievements in making the school a healthy place to learn, and to promote healthy eating and active living. A large variety of nutritious snacks were prepared by staff and students and served to the entire student body during recess and lunch. Students had an opportunity to sample a wide variety of fresh and dried fruits, juices, vegetables and low fat dip, as well as a variety of pre-packaged snacks (granola bars, bran bites, etc.). Fresh guacamole and hummus spreads were also introduced and seemed to be widely accepted by students. Empty tables at the end of lunch hour were evidence that students fully enjoyed the tasting opportunity!

Holy Cross Elementary, Holyrood

At Holy Cross Elementary School commotion day began with a nutritious breakfast. With an emphasis on exercise and good nutrition, the students then moved to the gym for a variety of music and movement activities. Each class was assigned a team colour and healthy food name; i.e. red for Team Apple. Classes also made a banner that promoted a living healthy motto; these banners have been posted up throughout our school. During the afternoon session, the whole school, staff and students, participated in the Terry Fox Walk.

Whitbourne Elementary, Whitbourne

Healthy Commotion Day at Whitbourne Elementary started with the students meeting in the gym for a prize draw and a DVD on the legacy of Terry Fox. Following that all students walked around the community to raise awareness of the Terry Fox Foundation. When the students arrived back at the school there were huge trays of fresh fruits and veggies for them to enjoy! Then to wrap the day up students participated in a Fits Kids aerobics class lead by the physical education teacher Mrs. George and the music teacher Ms. Reckling.

Crescent Collegiate, South Dildo

The students at Crescent Collegiate started their Commotion Day with group power walk around town. When the students arrived back at the school there was a wide array of fresh fruit for their enjoyment. The afternoon was gym activities highlighted by the obstacle course that was set up by the senior high physical education class. The students loved this and it brought many laughs to everyone participating! Afterwards, students were entitled to recreation time in the gym where there was a diverse range of activities going on.

Epiphany Elementary, Heart’s Delight

On Friday, September 26, Epiphany Elementary in Heart’s Delight celebrated this years Living Healthy Commotion. Students, parents and staff enjoyed an exciting day of activities, including heart healthy circuits, a poster contest and a fitness dance-a-thon. Students were treated to a variety of fruit for recess, and had a great time playing Fruity Fear Factor. The grade 5/6 class had the greatest number of students try the different fruits and vegetables, winning themselves an extra physical education class! The school also incorporated its annual Terry Fox walk into Commotion Day. Members of the local fire department and ambulance service joined student’s staff and parents in an hour long walk around the community.

Persalvic Elementary, Victoria

Commotion Day started with nutrition bingo and ended with the annual Terry Fox Walk. Activities in between involved physical fitness, trivia challenges and presentations on nutrition by Eastern Health dietitian intern Nicole Penton. Staff and students enjoyed healthy snacks together and danced their way through the corridors to the sound of music during recess and lunch break. A banner singing ceremony capped off the day which was an idea originated from a group of students in a Healthy Living Module led by Mr. John Drover. The requirement for signing the banner was to agree to follow a healthy living lifestyle. This lifestyle included three main components. 1. Be physically active 2. Make healthy food choices 3. Be smoke free. This banner will be displayed in the main lobby of the school for staff, students and the general public to view as a reminder of Persalvic’s commitment to a healthy way of life.

St. Catherine’s Academy, Mount Carmel

The Kindergarden to grade 6 students were involved in activities throughout the day and the grade 7 -12 students joining the festivities in the afternoon. The day started with a 40 minute walk around the school. Students walked and talked and had a great time. Everyone then moved into the gym where the Living Healthy committee had an obstacle course set up for the students enjoyment. When recess came students were delighted to find snacks laid out. They stuffed themselves with fruit, cheese, crackers, yogurt and juice. Then it was off to the gym again to dance to some oldies a few modern songs, by the end of the hour students and teachers were exhausted! After lunch the grade 1- 6 students enjoyed an afternoon playing games on the field. We even got our hips swinging as we competed in a hoola hoop contest. The grade 7- 12 students played various team sports such as hockey, soccer and volleyball both in the gym and on the school parking lot.

Acreman Elementary, Green’s Harbour

Students at Acreman Elementary participated in the Terry Fox Walk/Walk-a-thon with a portion of the proceeds going to the Terry Fox Foundation. Just before leaving for their walk, a draw was made for a Terry Fox T-shirt and Kindergarten student, Logan George, won the shirt. When the children returned from their walk, they were treated to a fresh fruit salad that was prepared by two parent volunteers. The weather was extremely cooperative and a good time was had by all participants.

All Hallows Elementary, Clarke’s Beach

Teachers and students combined the living healthy commotion day with the annual Terry Fox walk. The morning began with a Terry Fox assembly to give the students an idea of the great things he accomplished. Following the assembly students gathered for healthy snacks to give them energy for the stations that followed! These stations included obstacle courses, firefighter water carry, sack races, playground time, cup stacking and tae kwon doe activities. The school used this day as a kick off of their goal of having students active for at least 20 minutes per day!
