Torbay- Huff and Puff Before You Stuff Event, June 2011
The Town of Torbay’s Recreation Department has partnered with Eat Great and Participate, an initiative that aims to make it easier for community members to eat healthy when attending recreation facilities and community events.
On Saturday June 18, 2011 the Town of Torbay held its first “Huff and Puff Before You Stuff” event at Holy Trinity Elementary School. The event involved an hour and 15 minute workout of kick-boxing, zumba, aerobics and yoga, followed by a healthy food expo of healthy snack samples prepared by Finer Side Catering. Samples included Acai and Blueberry Smoothie, Moroccan Spiced Chicken and Chickpea Chili, and a Mediterranean Quinoa Salad.
Steve Martin, Torbay’s Community Events Coordinator was in charge of the event. When asked how he came up with the idea he responded: “June is recreation month here in Newfoundland and Labrador so we wanted to come up with an event that showcased both healthy eating and exercise. We wanted to show people that there are in fact different types of exercises out there”. The event brought in over 100 Torbay residents. According to Steve “It was a big success. I’ve heard nothing but positive feedback from participants”.
Eat Great and Participate along with several other local businesses that promote health and wellness jumped on board with the event. These included Boxfit, Atlantic Physiotherapy & Wellness Center, Diabetes Association and Zumba. All groups contributed a variety of health promotion resources and prizes that were distributed throughout the morning. Participants also received a cookbook of healthy recipes and an Eat Great and Participate apron.
Jody Robinson, Town of Torbay resident, had lots of good things to say about the event. “It was a good day for getting out. I find it easier to work out with a group of people and it’s always fun to try something new. The food samples were a great idea- I didn’t know I liked chickpeas until today!”
Over the next few months, the Eat Great and Participate Coordinator, Jill MacEachern will be working closely with the Town of Torbay’s community volunteers, facility managers, canteen operators, event organizers, parents, and sports teams to promote healthy eating. Jill will be providing opportunities to learn about healthy eating as well as support for those individuals and groups interested in increasing the availability of healthy food and beverage choices in the Torbay community.
