Healthy Eating a Hit at the First Annual South Coast
Labrador Regional Games
On September 16-18, 2011 youth aged 12-18 from South Coast Labrador gathered in Cartwright to participate in the first annual South Coast Labrador Regional Games. Matt Kippenhuck with the Aboriginal Sport and Recreation Circle of NL and Regional Recreation Director for the area was a lead organizer of the event and was very pleased with the outcome. “The Games gave participants a chance to play new sports at a non-competitive event. They seemed to really enjoy playing different sports on teams with youth from different communities”.

The Games included ultimate frisbee, table tennis, badminton, soccer, cross-country running and the Northern Games. Both males and females participated together in the sports.
In addition to promoting physical activity, the Games promoted healthy eating by providing healthy meals and snacks. A group of volunteers from Cartwright prepared a wonderful selection of meals including chicken noodle and beef soup, chili with a whole wheat roll, garden salad, fruit salad, sandwiches (egg, tuna and ham), chicken stir-fry on brown rice and a turkey dinner on the final day. Snacks included white and chocolate milk, 100% fruit juice yogurt, fruit and granola bars. In addition, Jill MacEachern, Eat Great and Participate Coordinator, provided a “Healthy Eating for Your Sport” presentation to participants.
